Monika Tichacek is an installation artist based in Sydney. Her Romance installation saw Artspace transformed into a sterile white interior panelled with white plastic. The artist, swathed in white bed linen lay on a white platform as if reclining comfortably on a bed except that her head was transfixed by strings attached to four steel hooks piercing her upper lip and eyebrows.

Monika Tichacek’s body is the prime visual and visceral loci of her performances; however, unlike the live performance art of the 60s, Tichacek generally performs, films and edits her own work. Yet her performances are similarly explicit and graphic, wherein she sutures her skin and pierces her tongue, acts which complicate the stereotypes of femininity and sexuality.

Monika Tichacek’s Matthew-Barneyesque video The Shadowers became a cause celebre when it was removed to an R-rated backroom on its debut at Melbourne’s Australian Centre for the Moving Image. It presents a chain of surreal sado-masochistic interactions among a trio of female characters, one played by the artist herself.
