    Mori Kansai was a distinguished representative of the Maruyama school, but he did not take part in its modernisation. He led a literati lifestyle, presiding over the activities of the Joun-sha Kyoto painting circle after the death of Shiokawa Bunrin in 1877.     Kansai's real given name was Kokichi. His pseudonyms were Tokei, Kansai, Banzan, Zokeshitsu and others. At first, Kansai studied painting under Ohta Denryu, official painter of Choshu Clan. In 1831, he went to Osaka and became a pupil of Mori Tetsuzan (the Maruyama school). Later, Kansai became the adopted child of Mori Tetsuzan.

    Mori Kansai was the grandson of Mori Sosen (1747–1821), who was famous for his paintings of monkeys—including a work hanging nearby. Kansai chose the same subject for this painting, but his approach was much looser and more spontaneous. Kansai used a wide, flat brush and did not render the hair as finely and meticulously as his grandfather did.
