Nicholas Africano. Nicolas Africano was born in Kankakee, Illinois in 1948 and continues to work and live in the state. Originally working as a painter, Africano created large-scale paintings with wax relief figures that explored his life experiences. These pieces eventually led to his work with glass cast figures that he continues to create today.

Nicholas Africano, first associated with the New Image painters of the late 70s, became known in the 80s for his paintings and works on paper which featured small, isolated figures. Africano began exploring the sculptural possibilities of these figures first in clay, and then in glass, working at such major glass ateliers as Pilchuck in Seattle.
