Nicola Marschall A prolific portrait painter and generally accepted designer of the first National Confederate Flag, known as the "Stars and Bars," Nicola Marschall (1829-1917) was probably Alabama's most celebrated portrait artist. Born in St. Wendel, in Rhenish Prussia (now the German state of Saarland), Marschall's family were prominent and successful vintners and tobacco merchants.

Nicola Marschall was born in 1829 in the village of St. Wendel, in Prussia. His tobacco merchant father died in 1831. After leaving school, Nicola attempted to succeed him in the business. He had been artistically inclined since childhood and chose, after two years in the tobacco trade, to study art. Marschall came to the United States in 1849.

Nicola Marschall (German-American, 1829-1917), is best known for his portraits and his design of the Confederate Flag which became known as the "Stars and Bars." A German immigrant, he came to Mobile, Alabama in 1849 to live with a relative, and joined the staff of the Marion Female Seminary, where he taught art as well as music and language to young ladies.
