Patrick Nasmyth was born on January 7th, 1786 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son of well-known landscape painter, Alexander Nasmyth. Along with the rest of his ten siblings, he was given art lessons from an early age. As a teenager Nasmyth lost the use of his right hand following an accident, forcing him to learn to paint with his left hand.
