Paul Kelpe originally wanted to be a musician, but an exhibition in Germany made him realize that abstract art could be a substitute for music, and he decided to become a painter instead. His constructions integrating found objects into paintings were the first such works created in the United States and he painted two of the five Williamsburg murals, the first abstract murals in the United States.

PAUL KELPE was born in Minden, Westphalia, Germany, in January of 1902, and studied in Hanover, Germany. He was much impressed as a youth by the work of Kandinsky, Archipenko, Klee, Feiminger,.Schmitters, Kampendonc and Chagall. In the spring of 1925 he came to the United States and traveled and painted in various parts of this country.
