Paul Sharp was born in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire. He studied art at Leeds College of Art (1940-41) but was then called up and served in the RAF until 1946 after which he went to study at the Royal College of Art (1946-1949). Sharp then taught at Farnham College of Art becoming Head of the Department of Design.
