    In 1957, Mills hired artist Peter Hopkinson to paint a Polynesian mural in the Waldorf’s basement level bar. Hopkinson stayed in the hotel while he created the piece. The mural was inspired by a 1950s set of nine murals by artist Eugene Savage of Indiana – titled “History of Hawaii” – located on the cruise ship SS Lurline, which toured between Vancouver, Seattle and Hawaii.
