Born in 1957 in Pathein, a rice-producing region in Southwest Myanmar, Po Po had a talent for drawing at a young age. The sum of his formal art education, however, was in attending summer art classes run by the Ministry of Education in high school, where he learned about perspective and composition.

Po Po is a visionary pioneer, widely regarded as the country’s first practitioner of performance art, who forged new ground in Myanmar’s latent art scene in the 1980s. Po Po is a pioneer in the field of conceptual and performance art in Myanmar, and has been practising as an artist since the late 1970s. For his VIP Project (Yangon/Dhaka) 2010–15, he placed VIP signs in public bus stops in the cities of Yangon and Dhaka, the capital cities of Myanmar and Bangladesh, recording the politics of how public space functions under very different political conditions.
