Jan 21, 2020 · PORT ANGELES — Fifteen-year-old Adam Weller of Port Angeles took a 172-year-old piece of music and brought it alive Saturday to win the top prize in the Nico Snel Young Artist Competition. The contest, hosted for the 34th year by the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra, gathers musicians from across the North Olympic Peninsula to compete for more than $1,000 in cash prizes.

The Nico Snel Young Artist Competitions showcase the talents of our most accomplished student musicians. When funding is available, the Symphony offers scholarships to certain players in the Orchestra.

PORT ANGELES — Applications are due Dec. 1 for the Port Angeles Symphony’s Young Artist Competitions, this year offering $1,400 in cash prizes for musicians younger than 22. The two contests, to be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez Ave., on Jan. 23, are open to North Olympic Peninsula instrumental music students.

The Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1932 and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. The Orchestra began with a few fiddlers and horn players performing light opera and Sousa marches in each other’s homes and has become today’s orchestra consisting of over 80 volunteer musicians.

2021 Young Artist Competition April 10, 2021. Basic guidelines include: Contestants must by 22 years of age or younger and have resided in Jefferson County for at least one year at the time of the competition. The competition is open to all orchestral instruments and piano. There is no application fee. Performance limit: 10 minutes. First Prize: $500.
