Prodosh Dasgupta was born in Dhaka (now in Bangladesh) in 1912. He trained in sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts and LCC Central School, London, and the Ecole de Grand Chaumier, Paris, after completing his initial studies in sculpture at the Government School of Art and Craft, Chennai, and the Lucknow School of Arts and Crafts.

Born in Dhaka, Prodosh Das Gupta graduated from Calcutta University before going on to study sculpture under Hironmoy Roychaudhuri and D. P. Roy Chowdhury in Lucknow and Madras respectively. A member of the Calcutta Group, he also studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and Ecole de Chaumiere, Paris, before setting up his studio in Calcutta in 1940.
