In 1976, Shaw’s granddaughter, Alice Judson Hayes, transformed her family’s summer home into an artist's retreat to provide time and space for artists to create important new work.

    What we do — Ragdale Ragdale is a nonprofit artists’ community located on the former country estate of architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. Nearly 200 residencies and fellowships are now offered annually to creative professionals of all types, making Ragdale one of the largest interdisciplinary artists’ communities in the country.

    The Vermont Studio Center, with consortium partners at the Alliance of Artist Communities, PLAYA, the Ragdale Foundation, and the Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI), is thrilled to announce a $270,000 three-year grant generously funded by the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, to offer Creative Access studio residencies for artists and writers with spinal cord injury (SCI).

    Ragdale will offer 11-day residencies to those who have been admitted to the program through 2022. Ragdale is prioritizing the health and safety of the residents and staff. At this time we are offering 11-day residencies to two artists at a time to the nearly 150 artists who have been admitted.
