    American. Raymond Coins was born in Stuart, Virginia. His family moved near Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he later worked in the tobacco industry. Coins retired in 1976 and began to carve figures in stone and wood, producing a variety of sizes. He is well known for his small “doll babies” carved in stone, but also produced large figures in cedar that weighed as much as seven hundred pounds.
