Andrew Robertson was born in Aberdeen. He studied as a scene painter and miniaturist, working under Alexander Nasmyth and Sir Henry Raeburn. Robertson's two elder brothers were also miniaturists. After attending the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1797, Robertson decided to establish his own practice as a miniature painter in the city.

Robertson was one of the most gifted students of his generation. Born in Dumfries, he moved to Edinburgh at the turn of the twentieth century and befriended the Symbolist painter, John Duncan, who became an important influence on his work. He was also inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites and the French Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau.
