Roger Cecil. He was born into a mining family at Abertillery, deep in the South Wales coalfield, in 1942. Although he struggled at school, like many undiagnosed dyslexics, he wanted to be an artist from the age of 10 and he went to Newport College of Art when he was 15.

And he certainly sought none (his time at the Royal College of Art lasted only a few weeks: he walked out and returned home). But he was serious in purpose and completely dedicated to his art.
