The "in plate" signature - the one that is part in the image - of "EC Rost 1890" allows it to be sold as a "signed etching" because of the very loose definition of terms in "art on paper" world. It is the penciled "Etched by Ernest C Rost" marking that is questionable. Here we are into the murky "artist proofs" area.

Born in Mt. Vernon, NY, after the Civil War, artist Ernest Christian Rost was a successful 19th and 20th century painter, etcher, and photographer. By his late teens, several of Ernest Christian Rost's paintings, in the form of oil landscapes, were on display at the National Academy of Design. However, by the 1890s he shifted completely to etching as his primary artwork focus.

E.C. Rost. To us, the beautiful work by E.C. Rost has been enhanced by the beautiful gilded frame. This pierce carved gilded Victorian frame adds a touch of glamour to this otherwise simple scene. It has quite a bit of detail, although the frame shows its age. Please see the photos. Consequently, the patina matches the signed date of the artwork (1890).
