Russell Wray was born in Rhode Island in 1955. His boyhood exploration of the woods and creeks of Massachusetts, where he grew up, and encounters with the local creatures fed a deep interest in, and affection for the land and its non-human inhabitants; feelings that are at the heart of much of his art work.

Russell Wray was born in Rhode Island in 1955 to a mother who inspired his love of the arts. Encouraging him to experiment with clay, he spent many hours as a young boy sculpting clay animals that she would later fire in their kiln.
