Born in 1931, Shanti Dave lived in the village of Badpura in north Gujarat with his mother and brother. Dave started his career in the field of fine arts as a signboard and banner painter in Ahmedabad.

Dave is known for his experimentation with another medium – encaustic, in combination with oil, to create paintings in high relief. Shanti Dave received the Padma Shri in 1985 and the Sahitya Kala Parishad’s award in 1986. He has been honoured thrice by the Lalit Kala Akademi, in the Fifties, and is a member of its executive board.

He started his career as a bill board painter in his home town and later joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at Baroda to complete his Post Diploma in Painting in 1957.
