Steven Orner was born and raised in rural Pennsylvania, in the United States. He earned his B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute in 1993 and his M.F.A from Yale University in 1995. He now lives and works in Montreal and is a recipient of research and creation grants form Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and Canada Council for the Arts.

Artist Statement My work over the past few years has been devoted to exploring the dual themes of utopia and dystopia. Working in a non-traditional figurative style, my work has a strong connection to storytelling; my paintings are usually constructed as static or suspended narratives that often suggest the appearance of montage.
