The Sheridan Arts Foundation normally hosts 24 nationally recognized plein air artists over the Fourth of July weekend for the annual Telluride Plein Air. Plein air artists interested in joining the festival should read about the application process. The Sheridan Opera House was built by the Telluride miners in 1913 as a Vaudeville Theater and cultural center; since then, performers from Lillian Gish and Sarah Bernhardt to Jimmy Buffet and James Taylor have graced our stage.

Today, there are more than 500 registered plein air artists in the United States working “en plein air” to capture the light and colors particular to a location. The Telluride Plein Air is an essential fundraiser for the Sheridan Arts Foundation.

The Telluride Plein Air Celebration is a juried exhibition consisting of a panel of 4-5 jurors. The panel will review all submitted applications and select between 20 and 25 artists for a total of 25-30 artists to participate in the event. (The top five revenue-generating artists each year are invited back to join the following years’ event.)
