Thad C. Martin. Thad Martin was born in Sacramento, California in 1967. He contracted spinal meningitis while in first grade at Starr King Elementary in 1973, and and as a result he became profoundly deaf. His parents chose the Total Communication method, and Thad learned Signed English soon afterwards. Thad returned to the same school and mainstreamed there as the only Deaf student.

Jul 08, 2015 · Biographical Information: Thad was born in Sacramento in 1967. He was not born deaf; he developed spinal meningitis in 1973 and that is what caused him to become completely deaf. He was mainstreamed in a hearing school as the only Deaf student. In fact, his parents had to fight the school district in order for them to provide him an interpreter!
