Ruff names Walker Evans, Eugène Atget, Karl Blossfeldt, Stephen Shore, and William Eggleston as his main influences.

The luminous photographs in the Substrat series blur historic photographic techniques of camera-less photography utilised by image-makers such as Man Ray with contemporary modes of visual appropriation.
