Tomma Rum is currently organized by artists and art students in Sweden. In mid-Mars after traveling around visiting a short list of municipalities all around the country, we select which district to reside in during summer. We are usually in place for two months, most typically from mid-June to mid-August. Shorter project happens sometimes.

Every summer Tomma Rum team visits a new district in Sweden and with the collaboration of local authorities and/or NGOs, they open a space for creative activity. Around 12 artists live and work together at the residency. The center of gravity of Tomma Rum is the networking among its participants and the interaction with the local community visited.

The residency is part of Tomma Rum(Empty Spaces), a project that aims to map abandoned but still usable spaces and transform them into art hubs. A Stockholm art student came up with the idea in 2003, frustrated by the lack of studio space in her home town.
