Oct 15, 1901 · Tommy McRae (c.1835–1901), Aboriginal artist, whose Aboriginal names have been recorded as Yackaduna or Warra-euea, was probably from the Kwatkwat people, whose country stretched south of the Murray River near the junction of the Goulburn River in Victoria.

McRae lived in the upper Murray area of what is now New South Wales and is one of the best known Aboriginal artists working in Australia at that time. His preferred medium was drawing, usually steel–nibbed pen and ink on paper.

Tommy McRae was a well know early Aboriginal artist. His aboriginal name was either Yackaduna or Warra-euea. He came from the Kwatkwat people. He lived in or close to the Upper Murray River all his life. His drawings are some of the earliest examples of Aboriginal art and are collectible.

The artist Yakaduna, better known as Tommy McCrae, through his art and actions, involved his community in the entrepreneurial management of indigenous-settler affairs. Looking back, it seems as if his career was a major crossing-place between the previous era of Aboriginal visual expression and the post 1970s era of Aboriginal art in a global context.

Tommy McRae was possibly a Kwatkwat man from the Goulburn region, which is in Northeastern Victoria. He was born around 1830, and this was at a time when many Europeans were actually moving into the region where he lived. The earliest surviving drawings that we have from Tommy McRae date back to around the 1860s.
