    Jan 10, 2021 · A jewel of Art hidden in the Desert While visiting a friend in Green Valley, Arizona, located just 25 miles south of Tucson, she mentioned a trip to Tubac. An Artist Colony it is located a short 20 minute drive (from Green Valley) down I-19, south of her. We spent a most enjoyable and lesiurely day visiting the many shops located here.4/5(73)

    Established in 1752 as a Spanish Presidio (fort), Tubac now hosts working artists whose studios surround the former parade grounds. The village remembers this colorful history well at the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, located in Old Town, where outdoor displays and an excellent museum bring it all to life.

    Will Rogers Jr. settled in Tubac in 1955, and land developer Bill Morrow came to Tubac in 1957 to reshape Tubac into an artists colony. Hal Empie, the youngest licensed pharmacist in Arizona, was also an Illustrator and painter. He established his residency and studio in 1986 until his death.

    Its modern history as an artist colony began in 1948 when Dale Nichols built an art school there. The town and surrounding land owners have built and supported the Tubac Center of the Arts, which recently expanded in 2012.
