Artists are awarded three months in residency at LAP, which can be taken over three years. Artists frequently return to Montalvo several times over this period. Because of this unique selection method, which is designed to identify a diverse and international range of artists of the highest excellence, the Lucas Artists Program does not accept applications directly from artists.

The 10 LEED certified, discipline-specific live/work studios and commons buildings were designed by six unique teams of architects in collaboration with contemporary artists. In 1930, the San Francisco Art Association assumed trusteeship of Villa Montalvo and within a year announced the intention to launch an artist residency program, the third program of its kind in the United States. In 1939, the Villa reopened to the public as an arts center with artists-in-residence and a small gallery in the Villa.
