The Navajo and Hopi Indians of northern Arizona inspired Rollins throughout his life as an artist and were the subjects of many paintings, pastels, charcoals, and sketches.

Rollins was one of the first anglo-artists to arrive in Taos in 1893, and ultimately settled in Santa Fe where he distinguished himself as an art instructor at the Palace of the Governors, and as the first president of the Santa Fe Art Club. From 1910 to 1917 Rollins lived and painted in Pasadena until the Santa Fe Railway lured him to Arizona with a studio on the rim of the Grand Canyon, a favorite subject of the artist.
