From childhood Lowry loved drawing, but his mother had different ideas. She wanted Lowry to be a success in business, particularly as Manchester, then known as Cottonopolis, was booming. In 1903 L. S. Lowry became a clerk for Thomas Aldred and Sons in Manchester. Not being an artist frustrated him, so he had art lessons with his uncle Tom.
