Wyland, who started painting at age 4 became fascinated by the renowned French explorer and pioneer of marine conservation Jaques Cousteau. “I saw him as a poet and wanted to be like him.” Wyland spent his high school years engrossed in books on whales after an up-close encounter with two gray whales at age fourteen on a trip to Laguna Beach, California where he now resides.
