William Brymner was an influential art teacher and painter of figures and landscapes. He painted directly from nature, in the style of the French Barbizon school. Always experimenting with different techniques and viewpoints, he often chose Canadian subjects, such as rural Quebec. Brymner studied at the Académie Julian in Paris.

Description: [ CANADIAN ART ] william brymner (1855-1925) WASHING CLOTHES AT THE RIVER'S EDGE signed and dated '1883'; signed on the reverse oil on canvas 25.4 by 29.9 cm. 10 by 11.75in. This fine oil was probably painted in France, where Brymner went to study at the Academie Julian before returning to Canada in 1886.

His respect for academic training and his own delicate painting skill, combined with a gentle way with others' talent, influenced many men and women studying in Montréal in the early 1900s. Educated at Richmond, Québec, Brymner went to Paris to train for architecture. While there he decided to paint.
