William Leech was an Irish painter and illustrator whose works featured a wide range of outdoor and indoor subjects, including coastal and harbour scenes, landscapes, interiors, still life and portraits. Leech is noted as a strong colourist and was influenced by both the Impressionists (such as Monet and Cezanne), and Post-Impressionist painters (like Matisse and Van Gogh ).

Artist Biography. Born in Dublin, William John Leech studied at the Metropolitan School of Art and later at the RHA School under Walter Osborne and at the Academie Julian in Paris. From 1903 until 1917 Leech lived mainly in Concarneau in Brittany, but visited Dublin regularly and continued to exhibit annually at the RHA, who elected him a full member in 1910.

Leech is well known for the scenes he painted around the harbour at Concarneau with brightly coloured sails reflecting off the water. Many of these works were built up by the application of elongated streaks of hot colour. Baie de la Foret is a much quieter and sombre approach to painting, perhaps inspired by the solitude found away from the town.
