William J. Schnute was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and raised in Chicago. A self-taught carver, he began at the age of seven. Although he received a B.S. degree in General Science at the University of Iowa and began a career in cell biology research, his passion for wood sculpture developed into a full-time profession with his founding of Oak Leaves Studio in 1974.
