When the market for original artist's etchings dried up in the early 1930s, and with encouragement from Winifred, Tunnicliffe wrote to the publisher Putnam's to see if they would be interested in using his work for Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter, first released without illustrations in 1927. They liked his sample etchings, but for printing, they needed wood engravings.

Tunnicliffe worked in several media, including watercolor painting, etching and aquatint, wood engraving, woodcut, scraperboard (sometimes called scratchboard), and oil painting. William Warren Tunnicliffe is credited by Charles Goldfarb as being the first person to articulate the idea of separating the definition of formatting from the structure of content in electronic documents. In September 1967, during a meeting at the Canadian Government Printing Office, Tunnicliffe gave a presentation on the separation of information content of documents from their format.

He studied briefly at Macclesfield School of Art, in 1915, at the age of 14, before moving to Manchester School of Art, in the same year. In 1921, he won a Royal Exhibition Scholarship to the Royal College of Art (1921-25); there he met Malcolm Salaman, who helped him launch his career as a printmaker.
