Ranney, William Tylee (1813–1857). William Tylee Ranney, painter, the son of William and Clarissa (Gaylord) Ranney, was born on May 9, 1813, in Middletown, Connecticut. By 1826 he was living with an uncle, William Nott, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he was apprenticed to a tinsmith. There he probably made his first sketches.
