About the Artist. Willie worked as a sanitation worker in Atlanta and collected junk to make into art. “Willie Jinks was born in 1921 into a sharecropper family in Locust Grove, Georgia. As one of 13 children, he moved to Atlanta where he worked for the department of sanitation and began salvaging materials. After retiring Jinks began creating images on the materials he had gathered during his working years.

Willie Jinks was born in Locust Grove, GA., the son of a sharecropper and one of 13 children. At an early age, Jinks had a fascination with nature (trees, rabbits, dogs, etc.) and mechanical things (slingshots, windmills, wagons, cars). As an adult, Jinks moved to Atlanta and worked for the Department of Sanitation for 30 years before retiring.

Willie has been painting for about two years (“I got real bored”) and started by building airplane whirligigs, which soon expanded to painting memories, animals, and funny tales on doors, plywood, windows and chipboard. Some of his paintings are two-sided. In his late 70’s, Willie has never been married and doesn’t have any children.

Willie Jinks I Found You. February 22, 2013. There is a artist from Atlanta that has inspired me. His name is Willie Jinks. I do not know where he is now or much about him. He made a lot of these paintings in the 80s and 90s. All I really know about him is that he made some paintings that are really great– simple and folky and wonderfully odd.
