Artist Statement. My interest in woodworking began first in Birmingham, Alabama, growing up in a home with a father who was an architect. I had several summer and/or part time jobs in general construction. While at the University of Florida earning a Masters in Art History I was able to get graduate credit for classes in ceramics and woodturning.

Artist Statement. Steve Gray’s love of wood began when he would make trips to his grandfather’s wood shop. There he has fond memories of smelling the Black Walnut lumber, poking around in all the small parts drawers and handling the tools that his grandfather used on the lathe. Steve bought his first lathe in 1976 and started making spinning wheels, furniture and cabinets.

My art is interactive - it draws hands to experience it’s warmth through touch. I “read” wood in order to cut and present it in the most dramatic way for the intended impression. Arranging combinations and contrasts so as to appear natural or complimentary, creating the appearance of veining or marbelizing of separate pieces together as if they were found that way, is often my goal.

Wood art has moved from embracing the natural beauty of wood, to wood is a canvas on which the artist creates his statement. The journey now is to think of myself as an artist in wood rather than a turner of wood. In November 2013 and again in 2017, I was granted a North Carolina Regional Artist Grant Award to aid in this transition and growth.
