    Yamamoto Kanae (山本鼎) was born into an impoverished samurai family in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, in central Japan. At the age of 10 he apprenticed with the wood engraver and illustrator Sakurai Kyôun (dates unknown) for five years. He moved to Tokyo in 1902 to study yôga (Western-style painting: 洋画) at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts while supporting himself as an illustrator.
