Nov 10, 2019 · Yang Yanping and her husband Zeng Shanqing belong to a generation of Chinese artists whose early careers were stifled by the Cultural Revolution of Mao Zedong. From 1949 through the late 1970s, the People’s Republic of China regulated the lives and work of its artists, limiting their expression and shutting out international influences.

Yang Yanping was born in Nanjing in 1934. In 1980 she was appointed an artist of the Beijing Academy. In 1986 she was awarded a fellowship for culture and education exchange with China at SUNY at Stony Brook, New York. She has exhibited widely since 1978 in China, Japan, America, France and Austria.

Yang Yanping is one of the most distinguished contemporary ink painters from China. She studied architecture at Tsinghua University, where she married one of her painting teachers, Zeng Shanqing. After she graduated in 1958, and a brief spell of teaching factory design, Yang decided to study art at the Oil Painting Department of the Beijing Art Academy.
