Ohara Museum of Art is the oldest private museum in Japan, featuring Western art founded in 1930 by a Kurashiki- based industrialist, Ohara Magosaburo ( 1880-1943) to commemorate Kojima Torajiro. (1881-1929) a western style painter who died in the previous year. Ohara funded Kojima to collect European art works through the eye of an artist.

This artist, Yumeji Takehisa, 1884-1934 ,is a well know Japanese woodblock printer. He reminds us of our painting friend from Ireland, Pauline Bewick. The Japanese loved him as the Irish love Pauline!. He loved to paint in particular women and his style was quite different than the Japanese style of the day.
