Born in Yamagata prefecture, Gihachiro Okuyama was an active woodblock print artist of both the Sosaku Hanga, or “creative print,” and the Shin Hanga, or “new print,” movement. Okuyama began his formal artistic study with Gajin Kosaka in 1923, as well as with Kendo Ishii, and began regularly exhibiting prints with Japan Creative Print Association in 1927.

Okuyama established the Japan Print Institute (Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho) in 1946 and worked as a woodblock artist for the rest of his life. Overall: 23 1/2 x 14 in.

Gihachiro Okuyama was a very creative and flexible artist, printing works in both shin-hanga and sosaku-hanga traditions from the late 1920's onward. In addition, Gihachiro Okuyama was one of only a few artists to work within the commercial arts; producing posters, designs, and advertisements for various firms during the limited fine art market of the great depression and Pacific war era.
