James Timothy Gleeson was born in Hornsby, a suburb of Sydney Australia in 1915. He studied art at East Sydney Technical College, and teaching at the Sydney Teachers College. His first exhibit was part of a student exhibition at the Sydney Teachers College where he displayed his ‘City on a tongue’ in 1938, and he has exhibited regularly since.

James Gleason was born in New York City to William Gleason and Mina Crolius, who were both in the theatre. He was married to Lucile Gleason (born Lucile Webster), and had a son, Russell Gleason.
