Walter Henry Williams Jr., was an American-born artist, painter, printmaker, and sculptor born on August 11, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York to parents of West Indian heritage. His mother Dorothy, compassionate and also an artist, died of pneumonia when he was five years old shortly after separating from his father.

Painter, printmaker and sculptor, Walter Williams studied art at the Brooklyn Museum Art School under Ben Shahn, Reuben Tam, and Gregoria Prestopino. He also spent a summer studying art at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. In 1955, Williams won a Whitney Fellowship that permitted him to work and travel in Mexico.

African-American artist Walter Henry Williams was born in Brooklyn, New York, August 11, 1920. He studied art at the Brooklyn Museum Art School with Ben Shahn, Reuben Tam and Gregorio Prestopino under the G.I. Bill between 1951 and 1955 and began to exhibit his work in 1954. He also spent the summer of 1953 studying art at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.
