Upon reaching nearly 60 years of age and working up to that point as a laborer and janitor, Edmondson left his job when he received a call from the divine to "carry forth" creating his own art. After selling a few tombstones to neighbors, Edmondson began carving funerary sculptures of animals, angels, preachers, and other related subjects.
